CMA data (Credit Monitoring Arrangement data) is the set of financial statements banks use to assess working capital and term loans. The standard CMA data format shows sales, profit, current assets, current liabilities and the maximum permissible bank finance (MPBF) for past, current and projected years.

This free CMA data format maker builds a three-year projection from a few inputs. Fill in your sales, costs, holding levels and loans above, then generate the operating statement, current assets and liabilities, MPBF and key ratios. You can download everything as a CSV file that opens in Excel.

Key takeaways

  • CMA stands for Credit Monitoring Arrangement.
  • Banks use CMA data to set and renew working capital limits.
  • MPBF shows the maximum working capital finance a bank should give.
  • Download the output in Excel format and share it with your CA.

How to Use the CMA Data Format Maker

  1. Enter sales and costsAdd projected Year 1 sales, growth, cost of sales and other expenses.
  2. Set holding levelsEnter inventory, receivable and creditor days, plus other current items.
  3. Add loans and net worthEnter your net worth, term loan and interest rates.
  4. Generate the CMA dataPress Generate to build Forms II, IV and V with key ratios.
  5. Download in ExcelSave the result as a CSV file for Excel, or print it as a PDF.

The Six Forms in the CMA Data Format

FormWhat it shows
Form IExisting and proposed bank limits
Form IIOperating statement: sales, costs and profit
Form IIIAnalysis of the balance sheet
Form IVComparative statement of current assets and current liabilities
Form VComputation of maximum permissible bank finance (MPBF)
Form VIFund flow statement

This tool generates Forms II, IV and V, plus the key ratios banks check. Your CA can add Form I, the full balance sheet in Form III, and the fund flow in Form VI from your audited accounts.

How MPBF Is Calculated

Working capital gap = Current assets − Current liabilities (excluding bank borrowings)
MPBF (second method) = 75% of current assets − Current liabilities (excluding bank borrowings)
Turnover method (MSE limits up to ₹5 crore) = 20% of projected sales

For MSE borrowers with fund-based limits up to ₹5 crore, RBI guidelines ask banks to assess working capital at 25% of projected turnover. The borrower brings 5% and the bank finances at least 20%. Banks may also use the traditional method if it gives a higher figure.

CMA data example

Take a unit with projected Year 1 sales of ₹1.20 crore and the sample inputs above. Current assets come to ₹32,48,219 and current liabilities to ₹9,30,411, so the working capital gap is ₹23,17,808. The second method gives an MPBF of ₹15,05,753. The turnover method gives ₹24,00,000; however, the tool limits it to ₹17,17,808 so the owner keeps a 5% margin. Therefore, the assessed finance is ₹17,17,808 and the current ratio is 1.23.

Key Ratios Banks Check in CMA Data

  • Current ratio: current assets divided by current liabilities including bank finance. The second method of lending implies a ratio of about 1.33.
  • TOL/TNW: total outside liabilities to tangible net worth. Many banks prefer it below about 3.
  • Net working capital: the part of current assets funded by your own long-term money.
  • Profit margins: PBDIT and net profit as a share of sales.
Tip

Banks also ask for the last two years of audited figures. Keep your projections close to past performance so they look realistic.

Banks assess working capital limits under RBI norms. For the rules on the turnover and second methods, read the RBI master circular on lending to the MSME sector.

Estimate your limit quickly with the working capital loan calculator, and check repayment strength with the DSCR calculator. For a new unit, use the project report maker instead. In addition, see our business loan scheme guides and the CGTMSE fee calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the full form of CMA data?

CMA stands for Credit Monitoring Arrangement. CMA data is the set of financial statements banks use to assess and monitor working capital and term loans.

What does the CMA data format include?

The standard CMA format has six forms: existing and proposed limits, operating statement, balance sheet analysis, current assets and liabilities, MPBF calculation, and fund flow.

Is CMA data required for a cash credit limit?

Yes. Banks usually ask for CMA data when you apply for or renew a cash credit or other working capital limit, and often for larger term loans too.

What is the difference between CMA data and a project report?

A project report explains a new project, its cost and its profit. CMA data focuses on financial statements, working capital needs and ratios, usually for an existing business.

How is MPBF calculated in CMA data?

Under the second method of lending, MPBF is 75% of current assets minus current liabilities other than bank borrowings. For MSE limits up to ₹5 crore, banks also use 20% of projected turnover.

Who prepares CMA data?

A chartered accountant usually prepares and certifies the final CMA data. You can use this tool to build a first draft and check your numbers before you meet your CA.
