MSME Registration Online: Free Udyam Process, Documents and Benefits

MSME registration online on a laptop by a small business owner

MSME registration online means registering your business on the government’s Udyam portal to get a permanent Udyam Registration Number and certificate. It is free, paperless and based on self-declaration with Aadhaar and PAN. Once registered, a micro, small or medium enterprise can access collateral-free loans, priority sector lending, delayed-payment protection and government tender benefits.

This guide explains who should register, the new classification limits, the details you need and each step on the portal. Additionally, it covers the Udyam Assist Platform for small informal units and the common mistakes that cause trouble later.

Quick answer: To complete MSME registration online, visit the official Udyam Registration portal, verify your Aadhaar with an OTP, validate your PAN, fill in business details such as address, bank account, activity and NIC codes, and submit. Registration is free, needs no document uploads and gives a permanent Udyam number with a QR-coded certificate.

Key Takeaways

  • Udyam registration is free on the official portal; no agent or website can legally charge you for it.
  • From 1 April 2025, micro units can invest up to ₹2.5 crore with turnover up to ₹10 crore.
  • You need Aadhaar and PAN; GSTIN is needed where GST registration applies to you.
  • Informal micro units without GST can register through the Udyam Assist Platform.
  • The certificate is permanent, with no renewal, but you must keep details updated.

What Is MSME Registration Online (Udyam Registration)?

Udyam registration replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) and Entrepreneurs’ Memorandum on 1 July 2020. Since then, MSME registration online happens only on the Udyam portal run by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

The system pulls investment and turnover data from income tax and GST records linked to your PAN. As a result, the classification is largely automatic. Moreover, each enterprise gets one permanent number, although it can list several activities under that single registration.

Only one official portalThe Ministry’s portal states that no private online or offline system, service, agency or person is authorised to handle Udyam registration. Several look-alike websites charge fees for this free service, so check the address carefully before you enter Aadhaar details.

MSME Classification for MSME Registration Online

Your category depends on two tests together: investment in plant, machinery or equipment, and annual turnover. Both limits rose sharply from 1 April 2025 under notification S.O. 1364(E) dated 21 March 2025.

CategoryInvestment limit (from 1 April 2025)Turnover limit (from 1 April 2025)Earlier limits (2020–2025)
MicroUp to ₹2.5 croreUp to ₹10 crore₹1 crore / ₹5 crore
SmallUp to ₹25 croreUp to ₹100 crore₹10 crore / ₹50 crore
MediumUp to ₹125 croreUp to ₹500 crore₹50 crore / ₹250 crore

How classification works in practice

An enterprise falls into a category only if it meets both the investment and turnover tests. If it crosses either limit, it moves to the next category. Notably, export turnover is excluded when the system calculates turnover for classification. Consequently, export-oriented units can stay micro or small even with large overseas sales.

Who Should Do MSME Registration Online?

Any proprietorship, partnership, LLP, company, cooperative, society or trust that makes goods or provides services can register. In particular, MSME registration online is worth doing if you:

  • Plan to take a business loan under Mudra, CGTMSE, PMEGP or Stand-Up India
  • Sell to larger companies or government departments and want payment protection
  • Want to bid for government tenders or sell on the GeM portal
  • Plan to apply for state industrial subsidies, power tariff concessions or ZED certification
  • Run a retail or wholesale trading business and want priority sector lending benefits from banks

Even a home-based tailor or a single-person consultancy can register. In fact, small units often gain the most, because a Udyam number is the first thing a bank asks for in a Mudra or PMEGP file.

Details and Documents Needed for MSME Registration Online

You do not upload any documents. Instead, the portal relies on self-declaration and checks your details against government databases. Still, keep the following ready before you start, because the form times out if you leave it idle.

How to Do MSME Registration Online: Step by Step

The process takes about 15 to 30 minutes when your details are ready. Follow these steps on the official Udyam Registration portal.

Step 1: Open the new registration form

Choose the option for new entrepreneurs who are not yet registered as MSME. If you hold an old UAM or EM-II registration, use the migration option instead.

Step 2: Verify Aadhaar with OTP

Enter the Aadhaar number and the name exactly as printed. Then validate the OTP sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile number.

Step 3: Select organisation type and validate PAN

Pick proprietorship, partnership, company or another form. Next, enter the PAN; the portal checks it and shows whether ITR and GST data are available.

Step 4: Fill in enterprise details

Enter the enterprise name, unit locations, official address, date of incorporation and commencement, and bank details. Moreover, add your mobile number and email, because the certificate and alerts go there.

Step 5: Choose activity and NIC codes

Select manufacturing or services as the major activity. Then add every relevant National Industrial Classification (NIC) code. Choosing the right codes matters, since banks and tender authorities read them.

Step 6: Add employees, investment and turnover

Enter the number of employees. Where ITR and GST data exist, investment and turnover figures fill automatically. Otherwise, provide them by self-declaration.

Step 7: Choose the District Industries Centre and submit

Select your District Industries Centre (DIC), tick the declaration and submit with a final OTP. As a result, you receive a Udyam Registration Number immediately, and the certificate follows on email or through the portal.

Tip from experienceUse the exact spelling of your name as it appears on Aadhaar and PAN. Most failed attempts at MSME registration online come from a name mismatch between the two.

Udyam Assist Platform for Informal Micro Enterprises

Many small vendors, artisans and home-based units do not have GST registration. For them, the government launched the Udyam Assist Platform (UAP) on 11 January 2023. SIDBI runs the platform with designated agencies such as banks, NBFCs, MFIs and government departments.

Through UAP, an informal micro enterprise gets a Udyam Assist certificate. Importantly, the Ministry of MSME and the RBI treat this certificate on par with a regular Udyam certificate for priority sector lending. Therefore, a street vendor or small artisan can still access formal credit.

Benefits of MSME Registration Online

MSME registration online costs nothing, yet it unlocks several benefits that directly improve cash flow and access to credit. In practice, the first benefit most owners notice is easier bank lending, followed by stronger protection against late payments from large buyers.

BenefitWhat it means for you
Collateral-free loansBanks can cover micro and small enterprise loans up to ₹10 crore under CGTMSE
Priority sector lendingBanks must lend a share of credit to MSEs, which improves access
Delayed payment protectionBuyers must pay within the agreed period, capped at 45 days, under the MSMED Act
Interest on delayed paymentsCompound interest at three times the RBI bank rate on overdue amounts
Income tax rule for buyersUnder Section 43B(h), buyers can deduct payments to micro and small suppliers only when paid on time
Public procurementGovernment buyers aim to source 25% of purchases from MSEs, including 3% from women-owned MSEs
Tender advantagesExemptions from tender fees and earnest money in many government tenders
Scheme accessEligibility for PMEGP support, ZED certification and state incentives
Key benefits after MSME registration online

For collateral-free credit, check the guarantee cost with the CGTMSE fee calculator. If you plan a small loan first, our Mudra loan yojana guide explains all four categories.

How delayed payment protection helps

Suppose you supply goods worth ₹5 lakh to a large buyer on 30-day credit. If the buyer delays beyond the agreed period, you can claim interest and file a case on the MSME Samadhaan portal. Meanwhile, Section 43B(h) gives buyers a tax reason to pay registered micro and small suppliers on time.

Udyam Certificate: Download, Update and Validity

Your Udyam number is permanent, and there is no renewal. However, you must keep the information current, especially when ownership, address, activity or bank details change.

  • Download or print: use the print or verify option on the portal with your Udyam number and mobile OTP.
  • Update details: log in with your Udyam number and OTP, then edit and submit changes.
  • Automatic data: investment and turnover figures refresh from ITR and GST records over time.
  • QR code: the certificate carries a dynamic QR code that anyone can scan to verify it.

In addition, one enterprise can hold only one Udyam registration. If you open a second unit under the same PAN, add it to the existing registration rather than creating a new one.

Udyam vs GST vs Shop Licence: Which Registrations Do You Need?

New owners often confuse MSME registration online with other registrations. In reality, each serves a different purpose, and many businesses need more than one.

RegistrationPurposeWho needs itCost
Udyam (MSME)MSME status and scheme benefitsAny business wanting MSME benefitsFree
GSTIndirect tax collection and input creditBusinesses above the GST threshold or in notified categoriesFree on the GST portal

FSSAIFood safetyEvery food businessFrom ₹100 a year for basic registration
Trade licenceMunicipal permission for a tradeBusinesses in many municipal areasVaries by city

Therefore, think of Udyam as your MSME identity, not as a tax or trade licence. Complete MSME registration online first, then add GST, FSSAI or local licences as your activity requires.

Migrating From Udyog Aadhaar to Udyam

Older registrations under Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) or EM-II are no longer valid on their own. Consequently, those enterprises must re-register on the Udyam portal to keep MSME benefits.

  1. Open the Udyam portal and choose the option for those already registered under UAM.
  2. Enter the old UAM number and verify with the OTP sent to the registered mobile or email.
  3. Validate PAN and complete the remaining details as in a fresh registration.
  4. Submit to receive a new Udyam Registration Number, which replaces the old UAM.

Meanwhile, update your bank, buyers and tender profiles with the new Udyam number. Otherwise, payment-protection claims and loan files may still show the outdated reference.

Common Mistakes in MSME Registration Online

  • Using a fake portal: paying a private website for a free government registration.
  • Name mismatch: different spellings on Aadhaar, PAN and bank records.
  • Wrong NIC codes: codes that do not match your real activity can affect loan and tender eligibility.
  • Duplicate registrations: creating a second Udyam number for the same PAN.
  • Wrong figures: intentional misstatement is punishable under Section 27 of the MSMED Act.
  • Ignoring updates: an outdated address or activity can delay loans and payments.

MSME Registration Online in Numbers

Formalisation through MSME registration online has grown quickly since the Udyam portal launched. According to the Ministry of MSME’s year-end review, more than 7.30 crore enterprises registered between 1 July 2020 and 17 December 2025.

Total Udyam registrations7.30 crore+

Through the Udyam Assist Platform2.92 crore

For a new business, these figures mean one thing. Lenders, buyers and government departments now expect a Udyam number, so MSME registration online is no longer optional in practice.
